The Perfect Father’s Day Gift for Dad!

In Designers, Fashion, Trends, Updates on June 15, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Although men are considered ‘simple-shoppers’, it can become challenging when trying to find the perfect gift for them. So buying for dad this Father’s Day may be a bit difficult. Have no fear! I have the answer to the riddle: What to buy dad?

If your dad is anything like mine, when he wants something he goes out and gets it himself leaving very few options of gift choices for him when the holidays come around. Very frustrating! I’ve tried giving dad gift cards to typical “macho” stores  like Home Depot and Auto Zone. He ends up giving them away to one of my brothers or sisters or buys something for one of us with it. So I am giving up on gift cards for dad and moving towards something I know best…clothes!

After years of working in the retail world I have noticed that men will purchase tools and electronics before they would buy a t-shirt. So, lets help dad out this Father’s Day and get him in some new gear! Clothing can become tricky at times when buying for someone else so keep in mind a few things when shopping for your daddy.

First, jeans are difficult to buy for someone without having them actually try them on. The sizing fluctuates from different brands and different cuts. I wouldn’t put jeans at the top of your list. You can’t go wrong with a casual t-shirt from Ralph Lauren or Old Navy. If you want to get pops a more dressier look, the Burberry Golf Collection has fabulous collared shirts. Keep in mind they run small in size. Also, hard-working dads may want to relax on the weekends and watch some sports. So getting dad his favorite sports jersey will make him feel a part of the team.

When shopping for dad this holiday, consider getting him some new clothes. A nice t-shirt or a team jersey would be a perfect gift. Let’s face it, dad doesn’t want another coffee mug with your mug on it. Happy Shopping!

Eat. Pray. Love

In Trends, Updates on June 8, 2010 at 3:17 am

Sometimes we reach a point in our lives when we find ourselves saying, is this it? Especially if we have everything a modern American woman could want: a husband, home, successful career, but instead of feeling happy, we may feel consumed by panic or confusion. Kind of like reaching for the last pair of size 7 stilettos at a Nordie’s sale, complete panic! When feeling like this, one may even want to run away to a different culture to find pleasure, devotion and a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. Well, before you decide to jet-set yourself to find what you may be looking for…eat, pray and love!

The #1 New York Times bestseller by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat. Pray. Love., is about one woman’s search for everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia. In her early thirties (what may be seen as mid-life crisis range for some), Elizabeth Gilbert has everything a woman could want. However, instead of feeling happy, she finds herself being unfulfilled and confused. Following a divorce and depression, Gilbert sets out to three different cultures: Italy, India, and Bali. She takes us through her journey of her own wrong choices that are very relatable and insightfully shares the damaging side effects of contemporary mores. As I flip through the pages of the lessons she learns, I find them entirely importable. I caught myself saying “I know how you feel”, as she describes her longing for the handsome Italian man to kiss her. What girl wouldn’t want that! Even if you are not a big reader, the book is very readable; or should I say ‘compulsively readable’. I can’t seem to put the book down…ugh…is it illegal to read a book and drive at the same time? Tsk tsk…

I am not in my thirties nor am I married, but I find as I read deeper and deeper into the engaging and highly entertaining pages that I can relate to what she is and was going through. Everyday choices must be made, what career path to take, should I buy the black pumps or the red pumps. Sometimes we make the right ones, sometimes we don’t. Confidence is what helps us make the choice. This book has shown me the true meaning of inspiration. I encourage every modern American woman on her journey through life to read this fun and inspiring book. However, do NOT read while driving, it is highly illegal and dangerous.

Fashion Review: Sex and the City 2

In Events, Fashion, Updates on May 28, 2010 at 10:10 am

After Fashion Week Tampa Bay’s pre-party and drooling over all the fabulous clothes at Saks Fifth Avenue, I eagerly walked to the movie theater in my little black dress and pumps to watch Sex and the City 2. I was so ready!! The Sex and the City girls always have superior style thanks to New York Stylist, Patricia Field. She made sure that the clothes in Sex and the City 2 played almost as big a role as Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda. She has succeeded once again! There is so much fashion to cover from this movie so I’m going to focus on the trends that stood out to me most.

The movie cleverly starts with an 80’s throw back of each girl. It brought smiles and laughter out of everyone in the theater. The outrageous 80’s outfits were hilariously over the top and the Sex and the City memories behind each one made them even better. The girls showed off their glamorous side with a ton of gold and silver accessories! Who can forget Samantha’s silver studded shoulder pads during their singing performance in Abu Dhabi.

The clothes worn in Abu Dhabi were very different from New York City. The main reason you may ask… 1) It’s the desert and 2) Avoid bursting into flames! They mostly wore light fabrics that flow like chiffon and silk. Shoulders were totally uncovered in Abu Dhabi with one sleeve, no sleeves and strap less tops. The beautiful dresses made the girls look like goddesses and what’s a goddess without her gems? Oh yes! Breathtaking bold necklaces matched with their simple colorful dresses!

I was saving the best for last! I absolutely love Carrie’s dress she wore to dinner with her ex fiancé, Aidan Shaw. Every girl knows you must look fantastic when seeing an ex! If you’re going to play with fire… look HOT!

Fashion, Fun, and Friendship

In Events, Fashion, Updates on May 28, 2010 at 6:58 am

Fashion Week Tampa Bay rolled out the pink carpet last night (5/27/10) at Saks Fifth Avenue for the Ultimate Ladies Night Out: SATC2 Pre-Party & Movie Night. Women of all ages joined the Fashion Week Tampa Bay team for a night of fashion, fun and friendship.

Upon entering the party doors, guests received an ultimate swag bag. Inside were fabulous surprises like Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream and a 1.5ml size perfume bottle of Jessica Simpson’s new Fancy Love. Now that’s what I call swag!

Meridith from 933.3FLZ

As Meredith from 933.3FLZ played the voice of the party, she also brought the music. That’s right, ladies were shopping to Lady Gaga. While shopping, guests received an extra 15% off towards their purchases for both Thursday (5/27) & Friday (5/28) , plus Saks generously donated 5% of the in-store sales from last night and today to Fashion Week Tampa Bay’s beneficiary for the event, Best Buddies Tampa Bay.

Ocean Prime Tuna Tartar

Now all that shopping would definitely work up an appetite, wouldn’t you agree? Well, no worries there because the very avant-garde modern American supper club, Ocean Prime provided their signature tuna tartar, PF Changs brought their Asian fusion cuisine and Mangroves supplied their delicious American dishes. So all food cravings were satisfied. Of course every Sex and the City party has to have cocktails and ZYR vodka was shaken up for SATC-inspired cocktails…I’ll take one up with a twist please!

Alexa Workman

The women were dressed to the nines and definitely brought their shoe game. I chatted with Alexa Workman, a Fashion & Retail Management student from The Art Institute of Tampa about what inspired her look for the evening. The Ai colors, black and red, inspired her outfit but she did what any ‘Carrie’ would do and merchandised it up with a black belt and accessories. However, women traveling from work to play portrayed a ‘Miranda-style’ by simply changing the shoes from pumps to strappy sandals.

Before heading out to the movie, ladies grabbed their personal bag of truffle butter popcorn also provided by Ocean Prime. The most anticipated ‘chick flick’ of the year was sold out. I’ve never seen that many women under one roof at a time, it was exciting! Although I will not give you any details of the movie, I will tell you this, if you haven’t seen it yet grab your girlfriends and have an ultimate ladies night out soon!

Lip Service

In Designers, Fashion, Updates on May 3, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Tom Ford— former Gucci designer, perfumer, and auspicious director- with his first film debut “A Single Man” in 2009–has launched his new Private Blend Lip Color Collection. Is there anything Tom can’t do?

The Private Blend Lip Collection will be his interpretation of 12 classic colors re-imagined in a “modern and authoritative way.” The shades range from a bare nude to a bright cherry red. This luxurious lipstick is formulated with exotic ingredients like soja seed extract and Brazilian murumuru butter (sounds exotic enough to me!), these are some of the key ingredients that give it a creamy texture and smooth application.

Something tells me history is going to repeat itself, the launch of the Tom Ford Estee Lauder Collection in 2005 drew record-breaking crowds to the Saks flagship in NYC and needless to say the limited edition make-up quickly sold out as well. The chic exterior of The Private Collection Lip Collection is enough to draw any girl into a Tom Ford cosmetics counter- it comes in an ivory case with gold details and it’s like a shiny toy that I have to get my hands on.

The Private Blend Lip Collection will be available stateside on June 1st at Neiman Marcus, Saks and Bergdorf Goodman. What’s the price to pay for luxurious lips? $45 a tube–to some a splurge but well worth it if it’s within your fashion budget.

Bikini Body Countdown

In Trends, Updates on May 1, 2010 at 6:18 am
With the summer being just around the corner, the countdown begins for that swimsuit-worthy body. However, if you’re anything like me and have a busy schedule where you even find yourself penciling in time to sleep, then finding a time slot available for a trip to the gym probably won’t be open. So, I have found a great exercise that you can do right in your own home. This Pilates-based workout will sculpt your abs, arms, butt and thighs in just 20 minutes. I know it seems too good to be true but I have actually been doing this workout for 2 weeks now and I am already seeing significant results. This workout consist of 20 minutes, 3-4 days a week of a series of exercises followed by 15 minutes of high-intensity cardio. If you stick to the routine, in just 4 weeks your body will be beach-bound ready.
Here are the steps to success:

  • Do 5 more push-ups with right leg lifted.
  • Fitness Focus: Chest, Back, Arms, Abs, Glutes

4. Kneeling One-Arm Side Kick

  • Come to hands and knees with palms directly under shoulders and extend left leg behind you to hip height.
  • Grasp a 2-pound dumbbell in right hand (optional) and lift right arm out to the side to shoulder level.
  • Keeping hips, head and arms stable, kick left leg out to side as far as you can without rocking or using momentum.
  • Hold for 2 counts.

You Got Mail: Just in the “IT” Bikini

In Fashion, Trends, Updates on April 22, 2010 at 2:44 pm

That’s right ladies, run to your mailboxes for the Victoria Secrets 2010 swimwear issue. Push aside all those holiday bills and the junk mail and dive right in to a fun-filled summer under the sun in Victoria Secrets new “IT” bikini. The “IT” bikini offers separates ranging from $14.50-$29.00. Most women are not the same size on top as they are on the bottom so purchasing a bikini that retails separate sizes is what I call a ‘perfect deal’. I have been purchasing Victoria Secret’s swimwear since I started, er…uh…developing (if you know what I mean). I use to have trouble fitting into bikinis that only came in one size such as a small or a medium. The small bottoms were always too small for my J-Lo booty and the medium tops were way too big for my less fortunate top. So, if you’re reading this and nodding your head “yes!” then I’m sure you agree that separates are the way to go! Large bottom? Small top? Doesn’t matter, the choice is yours!

So why is the “IT” bikini the must have suit for the beach? Let me break it down for you:

2 Beach Sexy Style Tops

Push-up Halter Top

Twist Bandeau Top

I recommend the Push-up Halter Top, for all cup sizes, hence, the word ‘push-up’. The Twist Bandeau Top requires a little something to help keep the girls up so I do not recommend this style for A-cuppers!

The traditional double-string bottom will hug your hips just where necessary. This year have more fun with your curves though and consider the adjustable hot shorts. This cut gives you a choice of moderate or full back coverage with adjustable sides sitting straight across the hips. If you’re like me this summer and are feeling daring; go for the Brazilian bottom! Yes, it has minimal back coverage but just think less tan lines!

Along with the excellent choices on tops and bottoms, you have over 20 color and beach prints for your desired “IT” bikini this year. When choosing your color or print always remember to be bright, be bold.

Who Wore What on Race Day…

In Events, Fashion, Updates on March 30, 2010 at 1:08 am

Gabrielle and me (Deanna) on Pit Lane

Whether you’re going to a fashion show or a race, dressing stylish for that specific event is always a must! There is a certain look that spectators wear on race day but making it more fashionable can be fun and as easy as 1, 2, 3… GO!

When I attended the IZOD IndyCar Series 2010 – Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg yesterday, I saw a lot of spectators wearing driver merchandise like shirts and accessories of Danica Patrick. Wearing a driver’s merchandise or IZOD is perfect for a racing event!

Showing off your personal style in your race day outfit is really taking it to the next level. I love embracing my artsy rocker side so I just had to mix that rocker style with my race day outfit. I mean hellooooo… what’s more rebellious than driving speeds as fast as 200mph?!

I wore a purple plaid shirt, light denim shorts, tan boots, a teal beaded bracelet (with a silver snake in the middle) and my Fashion Week Tampa Bay t-shirt to represent! Gabrielle also looked super stylish with her ripped jeans, sunglasses and bright purple flats.

The bracelet I wore on race day!!!

IndyCar driver, Arie Luyendyk, Jr. knows a thing or two about racing and fashion thanks to his own clothing line:  Anti-Celeb. He shared some great fashion advice on what to wear on race day like sunglasses, a hat and closed-toe shoes are a must! Sadly, I didn’t get his advice until it was too late on Saturday (3/27) and I was banned from the pit lane for wearing sandals…that were super cute, by the way. I mean, come on! Everyone wears sandals in Florida! Safety first though, so when it came to my outfit for the Grand Prix – boots were on the top of my list!

A spectator’s outfit should embody two things: style and function! You never know what the weather will bring in Florida! There wasn’t a single cloud on Saturday and it was pouring rain Sunday… so random! Spectators like Melissa were fully prepared for rain or sun! She wore black rain boots, sunglasses and carried the cutest pink Juicy Couture umbrella! Smart and stylish!

Dressing for function and style are simply the two most important things when putting together your race day outfit! Rain or shine… look stylish while cheering on your favorite driver in the IZOD IndyCar 2010 Series!

Girl ‘Turbo’ Power

In Events, Fashion, Updates on March 27, 2010 at 8:16 am

Bringing the spice to the race track, Milka Duno, the first Latin American female driver ever to be classified as an “expert” adds chic style to the raceways.  As I spent some time with Milka at the IZOD Indy Car Series, she sported a white tank, denim jeans, a jeweled belt and Gucci boots. Can we say va-va-va-vrrooom stylista! On the track Milka feels that every part of her fire suit accessories are important, and off the track her number one must-have accessories are belts!

In addition to being one of the most successful female sports car racers in history, Milka is also a qualified Naval Engineer with four Master’s degrees in: Organizational Development, Naval Architecture, Fishing and Aquaculture and Maritime Business. Talk about Girl Power!

She filmed her first major motion picture playing the role of race car driver, Kellie “Gearbox,” in the highly anticipated Speed Racer movie that is based on the 1960’s classic animated series.  The talent doesn’t stop there…she recently published her first bilingual kids book, “Go, Milka, Go!” . The book depicts her as a cartoon character teaching the importance of education to children of all ages.

Although Milka Duno wears many hats, on Sunday, Mar 28, 2010, during the IZOD Indy Car Series 2010 at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the only head wear Milka will be sporting is her sassy helmet. “Go, Milka, Go!”

Gear Up for the Raceway!

In Events, Fashion, Updates on March 27, 2010 at 8:00 am

Spending the day on the Pit Lane with an up close and personal experience of the burning tires and extremely loud engines is not something a fashionista gets to encounter on a daily basis. As Indy race car drivers like Ryan Hunter-Reay accelerated at speeds of 200+ mph around the street tracks of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, I developed a clear connection between Indy car racing and fashion!

Thanks to Josh from IZOD, Indy Car Series’ official sponsor, he explained how “fashion and style of the race along with the speed and energy of it should be an input in the energy of fashion.” Although IZOD is primarily a men’s casual clothing line along with Indy car racing being male-dominated as well, the brand does not leave out the females. Through various marketing channels, IZOD has not only reached out to male sports fans but also women shopping for male sports fans.

I got the pleasure of striking a pose with the IZOD Indy Car model and I have to say she brought a new meaning of sexy to IZOD. Macy’s, partner of IZOD, houses their  limited edition series of IZOD Indy Car clothing. Apparel such as t-shirts and leather jackets for both men and women are inspired by heritage aspects of motorsporting from the last 100 years of racing. As we all know, vintage is always in style!

My experience didn’t stop there…it went full speed ahead cheering on IZOD’s sponsored driver, Ryan Hunter-Reay while he participated in the qualifying race for the first U.S.A. Indy Car Race for the 2010 series tomorrow (Sunday, 3/28/10). He finished 2nd a few weeks back at San Paolo, Brazil in the first race of the 2010 series. While exercising my cheerleading skills I got to chat with Ryan’s fashionable fiance, Becky on her fashion point of few for an Indy Car event. “Pit Laners” (the girls hanging at the pit stops)- are quite fashionable with limited restrictions on attire, except for the footwear…which must be closed-toe. No open-toe stilettos ladies! Becky sported IZOD clothing from head to toe. Could she be the next IZOD girl?

So as I gear up for tomorrow’s main event, I will be sure to wear closed toe shoes, lots of sunblock and my IZOD hat…vvrrooooooommm!!!
