Bikini Body Countdown

In Trends, Updates on May 1, 2010 at 6:18 am
With the summer being just around the corner, the countdown begins for that swimsuit-worthy body. However, if you’re anything like me and have a busy schedule where you even find yourself penciling in time to sleep, then finding a time slot available for a trip to the gym probably won’t be open. So, I have found a great exercise that you can do right in your own home. This Pilates-based workout will sculpt your abs, arms, butt and thighs in just 20 minutes. I know it seems too good to be true but I have actually been doing this workout for 2 weeks now and I am already seeing significant results. This workout consist of 20 minutes, 3-4 days a week of a series of exercises followed by 15 minutes of high-intensity cardio. If you stick to the routine, in just 4 weeks your body will be beach-bound ready.
Here are the steps to success:
  1. Front Lift
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms at your sides.
  • Optional Challenge: Hold 2-pound dumbbells.
  • Lift arms overhead, palms facing in, lifting right leg from the hip until it’s parallel to the ground.
  • Hold for 2 counts, then drop right foot into a front lunge.
  • Fitness Focus: Thighs, Glutes, Calves, Abs, Shoulders

2. Front Lunge

  • As you lower into the lunge, bring both arms out to your sides at shoulder height.
  • Hold for 2 counts, then rise and return to standing, bringing legs and arms back to starting position.
  • Alternate 20 reps (10 per leg) with control.
  • Fitness Focus: Thighs, Glutes, Calves, Abs, Shoulders

3. Leg Pull/Push-Up

  • Come to full push-up position with hands under shoulders and draw abdominal in toward spine.
  • Lift left leg to hip height (point toes) or slightly higher. Lift and lower left leg 5 times.
  • Repeat leg lifts on right side.
  • Extend left leg, bend elbows, and slowly lower chest 4 inches toward the ground; straighten arms.
  • Do 5 push-ups with left leg lifted, then lower.
  • Do 5 more push-ups with right leg lifted.
  • Fitness Focus: Chest, Back, Arms, Abs, Glutes

4. Kneeling One-Arm Side Kick

  • Come to hands and knees with palms directly under shoulders and extend left leg behind you to hip height.
  • Grasp a 2-pound dumbbell in right hand (optional) and lift right arm out to the side to shoulder level.
  • Keeping hips, head and arms stable, kick left leg out to side as far as you can without rocking or using momentum.
  • Hold for 2 counts.
  • Return leg to starting position (keep arm lifted) and repeat 10 times; switch sides.
  • Fitness Focus: Chest, Shoulders, Glutes, Obliques

5. Front Plank/Back Support

  • Sit with legs extended and toes pointed, pressing palms to the ground 6 inches behind your butt, fingers pointing to your back.
  • Engage your abs and arch upper back slightly.
  • Press body weight into your hands and lift hips up, forming one line from ankles to shoulders.
  • As you lift hips, try to touch the balls of both feet to the ground.
  • Hold for 2 counts, then return to starting position; repeat 10 times.
  • Fitness Focus: Arms, Chest, Back, Legs, Glutes, Abs

6. Arm-Swing Curtsy Squat

  • Stand tall with arms overhead; bend left knee and lift left foot so that it hovers next to right knee, toes pointed down.
  • Keeping right foot planted, take a giant step out to left side with left foot. Swooping down, curtsy over left leg, curling left arm in front of body and extending right arm to sky.
  • Hold for 2 counts.
  • Return left foot to starting position.
  • Repeat 10 times; switch sides.
  • Fitness Focus: Thighs, Glutes, Obliques

7. Half-Seated Hip Circle

  • Lean back on elbows, abs tight, fingers cupping sides of hips to keep your pelvis still.
  • Extend legs 60 degrees, keeping lower back pressed to the ground.
  • Point toes, press inner thighs together, and trace 10 large clockwise circles in the air with both feet, then trace 10 counterclockwise circles.
  • Fitness Focus: Abs, Thighs, Obliques

8. Bent-Knee Roll-Down

  • Sit with knees bent and arms parallel to ground in front of chest, holding dumbbells (optional) with palms facing each other.
  • Lean back to engage abs; bend both knees 90 degrees and lift legs until shins are parallel with the ground.
  • Balancing on your tailbone, hold for 5 seconds.
  • Keeping arms and shins parallel to the ground, slowly roll lower back down 4 inches and hold for 5 seconds.
  • Using core strength, roll up to starting position. Repeat 10 times without touching feet to the ground or rolling all the way down.
  • Fitness Focus: Abs, Back, Shoulders

The Hippie-Chick Handbag

In Designers, Fashion, Trends on April 27, 2010 at 2:27 am

After the spring showers will come the May flowers. But before the flowers arrive let’s refresh our handbag collection with some sunshine! The Tie-Dye handbag. Yes, tie dye! Along with other trends from the 60’s, such as patterned pantyhose and flat boots, tie-dye is the handbag color of the season.

Rebecca Minkoff

The multiple colors within a traditional tie-dye print allows you to have more options when choosing a handbag that matches your outfit. Who doesn’t love more options? As long as one color in the handbag matches the way you’re dressed then you’re golden.  The tie-dye handbag is offered in many color palettes, fabrics, and trimmings. Derek Lam uses natural hues in its Nadia Hobo bag. This bag will go great for lunch with the girls after a day of shopping at the mall.

Derek-Lam-Nadia-Hobo

Nordstrom, what I like to call Nordie’s, has a great selection of tie-dye handbags this season. Designers like Be & D, Kooba and Rebecca Minkoff feature soft color palettes that will give any look a more feminine feel.  But it doesn’t stop there…these handbags come in cotton and here’s the spin, they also come in leather! Yes, you heard me correctly, leather for spring! What’s next fur in bathing suits? Ugh…hope not, but in the world of fashion, the sky is the limit.

So as you do some spring cleaning to your wardrobe, add some ‘flower power’ to your handbag collection with this season’s must have color palette: Tie-Dye!

You Got Mail: Just in the “IT” Bikini

In Fashion, Trends, Updates on April 22, 2010 at 2:44 pm

That’s right ladies, run to your mailboxes for the Victoria Secrets 2010 swimwear issue. Push aside all those holiday bills and the junk mail and dive right in to a fun-filled summer under the sun in Victoria Secrets new “IT” bikini. The “IT” bikini offers separates ranging from $14.50-$29.00. Most women are not the same size on top as they are on the bottom so purchasing a bikini that retails separate sizes is what I call a ‘perfect deal’. I have been purchasing Victoria Secret’s swimwear since I started, er…uh…developing (if you know what I mean). I use to have trouble fitting into bikinis that only came in one size such as a small or a medium. The small bottoms were always too small for my J-Lo booty and the medium tops were way too big for my less fortunate top. So, if you’re reading this and nodding your head “yes!” then I’m sure you agree that separates are the way to go! Large bottom? Small top? Doesn’t matter, the choice is yours!

So why is the “IT” bikini the must have suit for the beach? Let me break it down for you:

2 Beach Sexy Style Tops

Push-up Halter Top

Twist Bandeau Top

I recommend the Push-up Halter Top, for all cup sizes, hence, the word ‘push-up’. The Twist Bandeau Top requires a little something to help keep the girls up so I do not recommend this style for A-cuppers!

The traditional double-string bottom will hug your hips just where necessary. This year have more fun with your curves though and consider the adjustable hot shorts. This cut gives you a choice of moderate or full back coverage with adjustable sides sitting straight across the hips. If you’re like me this summer and are feeling daring; go for the Brazilian bottom! Yes, it has minimal back coverage but just think less tan lines!

Along with the excellent choices on tops and bottoms, you have over 20 color and beach prints for your desired “IT” bikini this year. When choosing your color or print always remember to be bright, be bold.

The military inspired look has stormed the fashion scene this Spring making the flak jacket one of the must-have items this season! The Marc Jacob’s Ready-To-Wear collection was among many that had military flak jackets mixed with feminine florals and structured trousers. Balmain also took over the runway with Christophe Decarnin’s feminine, modern-military jacket– complete with his signature bold shoulders.

Celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Rachel Bilson and the ever-fabulous Kate Moss have all been spotted with army gear spreading the military- fashion propaganda like wildfire!

For this look try the studded army jacket at Topshop…it looks A-mazing. For a more “vintage” military look take a peek at this Tempest Spring Military Jacket from French Connection- also to die for.

If the flak jacket is a bit much for your style- you can still march to the beat of your own drum, just be sure to incorporate olive green and khaki shades into your wardrobe this Spring.

Happy shopping!

Jewelry Project: T-Shirt Necklace

In Fashion, Trends on April 14, 2010 at 7:25 am
Just about every morning, I start my day with coffee, fruit, a croissant and The Martha Stewart television show.  Monday’s episode had Queen Latifah create a t-shirt necklace with Martha and I absolutely love the idea!

I know what you’re thinking… a t-shirt necklace?! However, jewelry is certainly not limited to just gold and silver. Any material that is worthy to be a part of your fabulous outfit can be used – leather, beads, metal, chains, buttons, fabric and recycled items like an old t-shirt!

Elle magazine
even shows this recycled inspired chic necklace made by Esprit and how it’s perfect for this summer!  I suggest choosing a color that will complement your unique features like your eyes, skin tone and hair. For instance, my t-shirt necklace is mustard yellow to enhance my green eyes and brown hair.

It’s really easy to turn an old shirt into a piece of wearable art around your neck! Just follow the steps below (courtesy of MarthaStewart.com):

Tools and Materials

  • Soft cotton T-shirt
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter

T-Shirt Necklace How-To:

1. Lay the shirt on a flat surface; cut off the hem and discard. Then cut the body of the shirt horizontally into strips approximately 3/4 of an inch long. (They will actually be loops.)

2. One at a time, pull the loops open and stretch until the fabric starts to curl. Stack the loops on top of one another so that all the T-shirt side seams are in the same spot.

3. Once you have the thickness you desire, wrap the seams with a scrap piece of fabric (about 6 inches long) from the same shirt. Tuck the end of the scrap under itself.

Brag about your awesome t-shirt necklace below or any questions about making it – leave comments!

Masterpiece or a Disaster-piece?

In Fashion, Trends on April 7, 2010 at 4:59 pm

This week’s spotlight shines on an accessory that was introduced last summer but hasn’t trickled into the mainstream until now… feathered headbands! This 20s glam has been re-awakened to spice up any attire you dare to wear. Want to add that ‘pop’ to your style? Think with your head, literally. Something simple like denim jeans and a cute top paired with a peacock headband will really portray that bold statement every girl needs. I recommend purchasing staple colors such as black, brown, and even red; yes, red is a staple color in my closet! Having these colors will not limit the outfits that can be jazzed up with this glam accessory.

Although social roles since the 1920s for women have changed and resulted in a revolution in morals and values, this hasn’t stopped in 2010. Women are still showing their worth and even express it through our clothes. The question is…would you wear this ‘flapper’ accessory? Is this a master-piece or a disaster-piece?

Vote on this trend and let us know in your comments below!

Zac Posen is the latest designer to collaborate with Target Go International and spread high-end fashion to the masses! His latest collection for Target debuts April 25th nationwide. If you’re like me, and simply cannot wait that long, you can sneak a peek at the lookbook –come late April you’ll be ready to shop!

The Zac Posen Collection for Target is reasonably priced starting at $16.99 with the most expensive piece being a red leather jacket for $199.00 (But totally worth it). The overall collection is very ’90s chic intertwined with Posen’s signature floral flocks.

With summer just around the corner it’s only right the collection have a few swimsuits (that are to die for). Check out the glamorous one-piece suits— they remind me of ’60s pin-up bombshells with a modern twist.

It’s so refreshing to see the collaborations between Target Go International and the various esteemed, high-end designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and now Zac Posen, among many others.  With the economy having an impact on all aspects of the world, it’s refreshing to see the fashion industry catering to the times by bringing high fashion to all “frugalistas” nationwide.

Creating A Perfect First Date Outfit!

In Fashion, Trends on March 25, 2010 at 5:23 am

As a little girl we were told that one day Prince Charming would come. Unfortunately, we cannot sit around and wait for him to rescue us out of our castles, so we must go out and find him. Single ladies…embrace the dating game! The most nerve-wracking thing about a first date, besides sparking a conversation, is the preparation: what to and what not to wear. You want to create a look that says the right thing. First impressions are important and must send the right signal. Let’s begin……

Whether you are going on a trip to a museum or catching a flick, create a look that’s low-key and playful but not skanky! Fashion’s security blanket denim jeans are always a safe route to take. You should pick a nice cut and color that will flatter your body, but stay away from baggy jeans…there is nothing flattering about a shaggy bottom!

When you’re walking into that date confident with your head held high , a classic pump should be gliding your way. You can never go wrong with a pump, they’re sexy yet serious. Also, flat, knee-high boots over a skinny jean shows that you’re fun and outgoing, yet the height is still casual and trendy. As for the rest of the outfit, look for a shirt that shows off your curves but does not have a plunging neckline…the girls should not make an appearance right away, so cover them up!

Always accessorize. A girl can never have too many bangles, but stay away from hats. Let them see your beautiful face with minimal make-up. Top your look off with some breathe-taking perfume that will hypnotize him. When in doubt, throw on a boyfriend blazer over your look (I recommend white for spring) and be your fabulous self!

Denim Diaries

In Designers, Fashion, Trends on March 24, 2010 at 2:34 am

To say that “denim is back” would be an inaccurate statement because its never been just a fleeting trend. Denim has been a fashion staple for decades and it has evolved into a ‘must-have’ textile for many designers, season after season. Though the denim trends have been endless and vary with each decade, one thing’s for sure – the perfect pair of jeans has always, and always will be – a solid investment.

For the Spring/Summer 2010 collections denim ruled the runways. The latest trend — denim on denim. Various designers showcased their own versions of this trend, including Chloe, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana.

I know… I know… for years now we’ve been told it’s a fashion “don’t”- but don’t let that discourage you from trying this trend. Of course, we have to keep in mind that as much as we’d like to think of the world as our own personal runway, it’s best to interpret the trends and customize them to fit our daily lives (bring it down a notch).

A perfect example is Reese Witherspoon– she looks trendy, chic and is pulling off the denim-on-denim look effortlessly. (The key is to mix two different shades of denim.) The most flattering combination is a lighter denim on top and a darker wash on the bottom. Not to worry, for those hot summer days coming up just trade in your long jeans for a pair of cut-off jean shorts!

Get Chic in Green!

In Fashion, Trends on March 17, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Today is St. Patrick’s Day aka the one day everyone is Irish, even if your dad is Italian and your mom is Indonesian… like me! Show your pride by looking chic in green! Here are some tips on putting together the perfect St. Patty’s Day outfit!

Jersey Gown $20 Old Navy

Green Velvet Dress

Of course, wearing green on St. Patty’s Day is a must…unless you like everyone pinching you because of your clothes. When you and the girls go out tonight, wear a long green spring gown or a short green velvet dress to really embrace your holiday spirit. Layering is a hot trend right now so finish your outfit with a beige cardigan.

Natural and simple colors like beige, brown and white work well with green. One of my favorite looks is the professional chic look of tweed bottoms. A pair of beige pants (perhaps tweed to dress it up) with brown heels and a green dressy shirt will look fabulous for St. Patty’s Day festivities!

Jessica Simpson Plum Bracelet $48 Macys

Since wearing green is the key feature to your St. Patty’s Day outfit, wear accessories that complement this earthy color. Stop the search for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and try just wearing gold! However, I think the best way to really make your outfit pop is to wear accessories with the color burgundy or purple. Opposite colors on the color wheel will always make you look super stylish! If contrast isn’t your thing, cool it down with a hint of blue to match the earthy tone of green.

One last tip… mostly everyone will be wearing green today so make sure you’re giving a chic twist that stands out in a crowd of green! Have fun and let me know how your St. Patrick’s Day went!
