Gear Up for the Raceway!

In Events, Fashion, Updates on March 27, 2010 at 8:00 am

Spending the day on the Pit Lane with an up close and personal experience of the burning tires and extremely loud engines is not something a fashionista gets to encounter on a daily basis. As Indy race car drivers like Ryan Hunter-Reay accelerated at speeds of 200+ mph around the street tracks of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, I developed a clear connection between Indy car racing and fashion!

Thanks to Josh from IZOD, Indy Car Series’ official sponsor, he explained how “fashion and style of the race along with the speed and energy of it should be an input in the energy of fashion.” Although IZOD is primarily a men’s casual clothing line along with Indy car racing being male-dominated as well, the brand does not leave out the females. Through various marketing channels, IZOD has not only reached out to male sports fans but also women shopping for male sports fans.

I got the pleasure of striking a pose with the IZOD Indy Car model and I have to say she brought a new meaning of sexy to IZOD. Macy’s, partner of IZOD, houses their  limited edition series of IZOD Indy Car clothing. Apparel such as t-shirts and leather jackets for both men and women are inspired by heritage aspects of motorsporting from the last 100 years of racing. As we all know, vintage is always in style!

My experience didn’t stop there…it went full speed ahead cheering on IZOD’s sponsored driver, Ryan Hunter-Reay while he participated in the qualifying race for the first U.S.A. Indy Car Race for the 2010 series tomorrow (Sunday, 3/28/10). He finished 2nd a few weeks back at San Paolo, Brazil in the first race of the 2010 series. While exercising my cheerleading skills I got to chat with Ryan’s fashionable fiance, Becky on her fashion point of few for an Indy Car event. “Pit Laners” (the girls hanging at the pit stops)- are quite fashionable with limited restrictions on attire, except for the footwear…which must be closed-toe. No open-toe stilettos ladies! Becky sported IZOD clothing from head to toe. Could she be the next IZOD girl?

So as I gear up for tomorrow’s main event, I will be sure to wear closed toe shoes, lots of sunblock and my IZOD hat…vvrrooooooommm!!!

Fashion and Fun Down to a Science!

In Designers, Events, Fashion on March 11, 2010 at 4:42 am

Who ever thought that fashion and science could go hand in hand?  Well, Friday, March 12, 2010 from 11:30a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club in St. Petersburg, we’ll get to see the two worlds combined. The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation will be celebrating its newly formed Florida chapter with an inaugural luncheon and fashion show fundraiser to benefit graduate students at the University of South Florida studying science, medicine and engineering.

Fashion and Fun Down to a Science will showcase featured designers from Tampa Bay by holding a trunk show along with a model presentation. Rhonda Shear, featured designer at Fashion Week Tampa Bay for the past two years (2008 and 2009), will be showcasing her sexy and sensual lingerie, shapewear and intimate line from her local boutique Maison Rouge. There is no doubt that she will  bring the spice to the science lab!

Along with this fashionable showcase, ARCS, an all-women volunteer nonprofit organization, hopes to raise enough funds through this event to support two $15,000 scholarships for USF Colleges of Marine Science and Cancer Biology. This event is open to the public.  To purchase tickets ($75/person), contact Elaine Smalling at Elaine@StPetePartnership.org or (727) 821-5166.

Red Hot Valentine’s-What To Wear

In Fashion on February 8, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Throughout the years our perception of Valentine’s Day has continually evolved. Gone are the days when the most exciting part of it all was going to the store to  pick out our girly V-day cards to hand out to our classmates. I remember one year I chose Sleeping Beauty cards- I specifically picked out my favorite one and wrote it out to my class crush. *sigh…

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner with the significant other or painting the town red with your friends, one thing’s for sure– when you look good, you feel good – so you’ll need a fabulous outfit!

This is the one day out of the year when I suggest to trade in that timeless “LBD” for a “LRD” (little red dress). Opt for whatever cut best suits your shape but definitely go with a fun and flirty look like this red French Connection “Wizard” strapless dress or this Bebe strapless “Tiered Temptress” dress . It’s the perfect ensemble for that swanky new place your date scored a reservation to or a Girls’ Night Out.

Keeping it low-key? Then pair your favorite jeans with this cute Olivia Moon ruffle silk top that I found at Nordstrom or something comparable for a casual yet classy look. With these solid red looks any accessories should be neutral and kept to a minimum. Think simple and subtle.

On the other hand if a bold red look isn’t your thing, simply switch it up! Keep your basics neutral and go all out with red embellishments. Think red belts, bangles, shoes and even a cocktail ring (not all at once please). Polish it off with bright red lips and your look is subtle-yet festive.

Whatever your Valentine style is “wear your heart on your sleeve” and have a fabulous day!

Witness the Retro-Futuristic Style of Tomorrow

In Designers on September 15, 2009 at 7:34 am

The retro and rebellion rocker era of the 80’s inspires modern fashion of today. Fashion Week Tampa Bay 2009 sponsor, Jay’s Fabric Center presents Ben Chmura who will bring fierce retro-futurism to Fashion Week.

Ben Chmura started by earning a B.F.A in Fashion Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2001. This talented designer was recognized early with the strong prediction of him succeeding in the fashion industry. My face literally turned green with envy when I learned that Ben met Andre Leon Talley, Vogue magazine Editor-at-Large! I can only imagine sitting across the table from the great Andre Leon Talley… trying not to drool or faint and suffering word vomit to express my love for Vogue. Ben Chmura was one of the four senior students to have the honor of dinner with Andre to discuss fashion and career plans.

After living in New York City and freelancing for companies such as TSE, Men’s Express, Ralph Lauren and American Eagle, Ben Chmura moved south to Tampa, FL. He has designed several collections living in Florida including Red Hood, Ozamapoliten, Welcome to the Jungle, Azteca and Venom. Ben also participates in many fashion shows throughout the Tampa Bay area, including his own Sweat Shop show.

I love the mix of unique retro style meets fierce rocker futuristic flair that he creates in his collections. Ben gives fans, male and female, quality designs that are effectively moving forward in fashion.

No time machine is necessary to see the future of fashion! Although… there will be lights, music and fast speed! Destination… Fashion Week Tampa Bay 2009 where Ben Chmura’s newest collection will be shown.

Relax and Go Barefoot!

Fashion Week Tampa Bay welcomes Barefoot Wine & Bubbly as the Official Wine of Fashion Week Tampa Bay 2009! With a wide range of wines and flavors to suit every pallet, Barefoot’s goal is to make delicious and affordable wines that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Barefoot initially started out in California in the Sixties as a “garage wine.” The brand was re-launched in 1986 and is now found in stores nationwide.  Behind its fun, carefree and tasty appearance, Barefoot is also a big supporter of improving our world to make it a better place for all of us. Like Fashion Week Tampa Bay, Barefoot teams up with non-profits to help do its part to enhance and build up communities.

Besides helping Best Buddies Tampa and the YWCA of Tampa Bay through sponsoring Tampa Bay Fashion Week, Barefoot also takes an active role cleaning up beaches to ensure they are “barefoot friendly.”

Barefoot’s interactive website is fun, easy to use and full of information about the brand, products, events and more. Check them out for recipes (like the tasty one below!), information about how you can get involved in your town and even upload your own photos and scrapbooks to their website. Even if you aren’t a wine connoisseur, I guarantee you will find their website entertaining and informative!

Southern Spaghetti Carbonara

Wine Pairing: Chardonnay

Ingredients:
1 Vidalia onion, or other sweet onion, chopped
8 oz smoked bacon, chopped
3 eggs, plus 2 egg yolks
2 cups sweet grape or cherry tomatoes, cut in half lengthwise
1 cup Barefoot Chardonnay
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1 package whole wheat or white spaghetti
Pepper to taste
Salt

Instructions:
Preheat skillet. Chop bacon and add to the skillet, and cook over medium low heat until the bacon has rendered all of its fat and it is crisp. Drain bacon on a paper towel or dishtowel. Drain most of the bacon grease, reserving enough to coat the bottom of the pan, about 2 tablespoons. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta. Sweet the onions cooking over medium low heat in the bacon grease until softened. De-glaze pan with chardonnay, and add tomatoes, bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Whisk the eggs. Temper the eggs by adding a little of the simmering chardonnay at a time to the eggs while whisking continually. Add the pasta to a large serving bowl. Add the onions and the tomatoes. Then add the eggs and toss until the sauce has thickened. Add cheese and mix well. The hot pasta will cook the eggs and melt the cheese.

Michael Della Penna: Around the World and Through the Decades

In Designers on September 13, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Creatively inspired at a very young age, Michael Della Penna has grown to thrive as an award-winning hair designer and is now showcasing his first collection at Fashion Week Tampa Bay. As a young boy, Michael was tremendously inspired by the style of the Beatles and other music, movie and TV celebrities of the Sixties.

Michael first ventured his creative spirits into hair design and was closely involved in the World Hair Championships for over 25 years, winning over 20 US titles, the European Championships in Strasbourg, France and the World Championships in Moscow, Russia in 2006. Through the World Hair Championships, Michael was able to showcase his hair art, fashion and total looks in several countries, such as: Paris, Berlin, Milan, Moscow, Budapest, Amsterdam, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo. These opportunities allowed Michael to study and become inspired by each countries culture, style and way of life.

“Travel is one of the greatest gifts and educational experiences that someone can reflect upon. The exposure to different cultures, thinking and languages has allowed me to view simple things differently and sometimes out-of-the-box,” said Michael Della Penna.

With all his accomplishments, Michael has decided to venture back into the fashion he loves. While his new line is being premiered at Fashion Week Tampa Bay, Michael says we can expect some “interesting combinations of exciting colors and fabrics and designs that should have an impact.”

“I’m very grateful and happy for the opportunity that Fashion Week Tampa Bay has given to me to showcase my designs. I feel this is the beginning for me of many beautiful experiences in the fashion industry.”

We are very excited to welcome Michael Della Penna to Fashion Week Tampa Bay 2009 and are looking forward to seeing what a mixture of passion, creativity, exotic lands and style can become. Purchase your tickets online now to Fashion Week Tampa Bay and experience for yourself the designs of a man who has caught the eyes of beauty and fashion editors in the U.S. and Italy!
